Stevens Edges Baseball, 5-4

Ducks take non-league game behind solid late-game pitching

TROY, N.Y. - The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team received 5.0 innings of scoreless relief in defeating Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 5-4, in non-league play at Robison Field. With the win, the Ducks improve to 16-10 overall, while the Engineers drop to 14-10.

Junior Jayson Yano (Foothill Ranch, CA/El Toro) picked the victory, tossing 2.0 innings, while giving up just one hit. He struck out three and walked one. Classmate Ryan Patterson (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) came on in the ninth to claim his seventh save by setting the Engineers down in order.

The Engineers opened the scoring in the bottom of the second, when sophomore Jeff Sitarski (The Woodlands, TX/The Woodlands) singled to left, bringing home classmate Jason Ramos (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) from third.

RPI starting pitcher Reid Roberge (Bristol, CT/St. Paul Catholic) was perfect through the first 3.0 innings, but ran into trouble in the fourth. A four pitch walk led off the frame, followed by a single - the first of the game for the Ducks - by senior Marc Calleo (Bayville, NJ/Central Regional). After a wild pitch moved runners to second and third, sophore Zeph Walters (Diamond Bar, CA/Diamond Bar) doubled to the gap in left center, driving in a pair. An error and a single brought home the Ducks' third run, while senior Brian Hennelly (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) finished the rally with an RBI-single down the line in right.

The Engineers answered with a three-run bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 4-4. With one away, senior Shane Matthews (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga Catholic) walked and junior Chris Holomakoff (Brien McMahon) reached on a catcher's interference call. A Sitarski RBI-single was followed by a fielder's choice off the bat of Jensen, putting runners on first and second with two out. Senior Tim LeSuer (Oak View, CA/Nordoff) hit an opposite field single to draw RPI within 4-3. Sophomore Thomas Desmond (Alamo, CA/De LaSalle) was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to even the score at 4-4.

Following four scoreless frames, the Ducks were finally able to break the deadlock in the eighth, when junior Nick Seiber (Shrewsbury, MA/St. John's Shrewsbury) singled home the eventual game-winning run with two outs in the inning.

Sieber finished 3 for 4 with a run batted in, while Walters went 2 for 4 with a double, a run and two RBI. Sitarski paced the Engineers offensively, going 3 for 4 with a run and two RBI out of the leadoff spot. LeSuer went 2 for 3 with two walks and an RBI.

The Engineers are back in action this weekend, when they travel to Clarkson for a four-game series, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday (1pm). The two teams will then play a twin bill on Sunday (12pm). Stevens visits Houghton on Friday (6pm).
