TROY, N.Y. - Junior Sage Sarkis and freshman Emily Livecchi scored two late second half goals to lead the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) to a, 9-8, victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Insitute (RPI), this afternoon at Renwyck Field. With the win, the Tigers improve to 6-8 overall and 4-4 in the Liberty League, while the Engineers, who celebrated Senior Day prior to the contest, drop to 6-6 (4-3 Liberty League).
Sarkis (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) broke a 7-7 tie with 7:54 to play in the second half. Just 39 seconds later, Livecchi (Rochester, NY/Out Lady of Mercy) tallied to give the visitors a 9-7 lead.
The Tigers were able to win the ensuing draw control, before running the clock down to three minutes remaining. RPI junior captain
Sara Bischof (Amherst, NY/Amherst) forced the turnover that won back possession. Senior
Erin Riley (West Nyack, NY/Clarkstown South) saw her shot, with just over a minute left, sail wide, before sophomore
Sophie Hager (Northport, NY/Northport) was denied by RIT senior netminder Caitlin Conway (Landisville, PA/Hempfield). Hager was able to recover the ground ball and draw a free position chance with 37 seconds remaining. Hager converted to bring the Engineers within 9-8.
RIT won game's final draw control, but freshman Maegan Schmauder (Franklin, MA/Franklin) stepped on the sideline with 25 seconds to go, giving Rensselaer one more chance. RPI passed the ball quickly up field, but Riley long-range shot, which beat the final horn, was stopped by Conway.
The Engineers scored the first three goals of the game to take an early lead. Junior
Erin DeLucca (East Lyme, CT/East Lyme) got things started with her 12th of the year, before Hager and senior
Jamie Wakefield (Windsor, CT/Windsor) followed.
Four straight from the Tigers, gave them their first lead of the game with 3:49 left in the opening stanza. Livecchi and Sarkis each had a tally during the stretch.
Hager and senior
Meg Colitz (East Greenwich, RI/LaSalle Academy) then netted late first-half goals to give RPI a 5-4 lead at the half.
RIT quickly regained the lead to start the second half, receiving goals from sophomore Nicole Bingo (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) and Sarkis. Colitz brought the Engineers even (6-6) at the midway point of the half.
Junior Corrina Mandell (Corning, NY/Corning East) put the visitors back on top by a goal, but it didn't last long, as Colitz knotted the score with her third of the game and 26th of the year.
Hager finished with three goals and two assists to lead RPI offensively. Colitz added three tallies, while senior goaltender
Erin Amarello (Griswold, CT/St. Bernard School) made four saves. Sarkis had three goals and an assist for the Tigers, who saw Mandell and Livecchi each net a pair. Conway made 13 saves between the pipes.
The Engineers are back in action next weekend, when they close out the regular season at Union College and William Smith College, respectively. RPI visits the Dutchwomen on Friday (4pm) and the Herons on Saturday (2pm).
