POTSDAM, N.Y. - Senior
Sean Conroy threw a 7.0 inning complete game to help the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to a doubleheader split with Clarkson on Sunday. After falling to the Golden Knights (16-5; 10-4 Liberty League) in game one, 13-10, in 11 innings, the Engineers (16-12; 15-5 Liberty League) came back to win game two, 5-3.
RPI used a four-run bottom of the first inning to get an early jump in game two. Sophomore
Jeff Sitarski came through with a two-run double to left to get the scoring started. After a wild pitch made it 3-0, senior
Shane Matthews singled through the left side of the infield to put the Engineers up 4-0.
A
Chris Holomakoff RBI-double in the third padded the Rensselaer lead, which was all Conroy needed to pick up his fourth win of the season.
Clarkson did crack the scoreboard in the fourth, when Chris Miller homered to right. Run-scoring base-hits from Matt Jenack and Greg Jasek brought the Golden Knights to within 5-3 in the fifth, but Conroy was able to shut things down from there, finishing with nine strikeouts.
Game one saw both teams put up crooked numbers in the opening frame. Clarkson plated five runs on six hits, including a two-run single by Will Coleman with one out in the inning. Dom Pirro and Nolan Driscoll later delivered RBI-singles, before Jenack capped the rally with a sacrifice fly.
Rensselaer answered in a big way, scoring seven runs on eight hits.
Justin Valente drove in two with a single up the middle, before
Jared Jensen plated two more with a base hit to right.Â
The Golden Knights crept back with a single run in the fourth, before Driscoll homered to tie the game at 7-7 in the fifth. Miller then hit a sac fly to give Clarkson the lead (8-7) in the seventh.
Jason Ramos answered with a solo homer in the bottom half of the inning to knot the score at 8-8.
Clarkson got RBI-singles from John Coleman and Paul Ludden in the eighth to take a 10-8 advantage, but RPI came right back with two of their own in the bottom half. Sitarski and Ramos each came through with run-scoring singles tie the game (10-10).
Anthony Padrazo broke the deadlock in the 11th, scoring Will Coleman with a base hit. Jenack followed with an RBI-groundout, before John Coleman drove in a run with a triple to right.
Andrew Smith (2-1) picked up the victory in relief, throwing 3.0 hit-less innings. He struck out two and walked one.
Aaron Kalish was saddled with the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits over 4.0 innings.Â
The Engineers are back in action next Saturday, when they visit Western New England University for a non-league doubleheader (12pm). Clarkson hosts SUNY Canton on Wednesday (4pm).
