Softball Takes One of Two From SLU

Engineers rebound from 1-0 loss in game one, to take game two, 9-8, in 11 innings

TROY, N.Y. - Junior Morgan Ten Eyck drove in three extra-inning runs to lift the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to 9-8 victory over St. Lawrence University, in 11 innings on Sunday. The Engineers, who lost game one, 1-0, move to 16-12 overall (5-3 Liberty League), while the Saints are now 12-10 (5-5 Liberty League).

With the Engineers trailing by two (8-6) in the bottom of the ninth, Ten Eyck (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) came through with a two-run single up the middle to knot the score at 8-8. The hit, which was Ten Eyck's second of the game, brought home pinch runners, Victoria Greco (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) and Kathleen Baker (Airmont, NY/Suffern) from second and third, respectively.

The International Tiebreaker rule was put into place in the 10th and the Saints immediately bunted sophomore Jordan Sheridan (Fayetteville, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) to third. RPI sophomore righthander Stephanie Caudle (Gainesville, FL/Gainesville) was able escape unscathed, however, inducing a pop-up from freshman Kylee Knight (Oakland, ME/Messalonskee) and striking out senior Brady Cooper (Lakeville, CT/Hotchkiss) to end the inning.

Rensselaer used the sacrifice bunt to get a runner to third with one out in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore Morgan Kollmeier (Kennett Square, PA/Kennett) then reached on an error, putting runners on the corners with just one away. Junior Taylor Ten Eyck (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) sent a ground ball to third and Saints freshman third baseman Kelsey Murphy (Bedford, NH/Bedford) threw home to cut down the winning run. SLU righthander Kyle Plimpton (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville South) followed with a walk to Caudle, which loaded the bases, before getting senior Jena Servidone (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) to fly out to center.

St. Lawrence successfully sacrificed Cooper to third to open the 11th, but a strikeout kept her there with two away. RPI freshman shortstop Kacie Herity (Chesterfield, NJ/Northern Burlington) then took away an RBI-single from Laura Finley (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville East) ranging far to her left to make the play.

In the bottom of the 11th, senior Jocilyn Rudisill (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) gave herself up to move Servidone to third with one out. Ten Eyck then lifted the walk-off sacrifice fly to left, to win the game.

SLU scored the first two runs of the game, plating one in the first and one in the third. Rensselaer answered with single runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings to tie the game at 2-2.

The Engineers took their first lead of the afternoon in the fifth, scoring four runs on five hits, including four straight singles with one out in the inning. Junior Danielle Balestrini (Lake Placid, NY/Lake Placid) capped the rally with a two-run base-hit to center.

After a scoreless sixth, the Saints rallied to tie the game in the top of the seveth, stringing together four hits and a walk to open the stanza. Caudle came on in relief of senior Kristina Weltzin (Commerce Town, MI/Walled Lake Northern) and promptly struck out the first batter she faced. Finley then came through with a single to pull the visitors to within 6-5, before Murphy tied the game with fielder's choice grounder to second.

St. Lawrence took an 8-6 lead in the top of the ninth, thanks to an RBI-groundout off the bat of Murphy. Sophomore Hannah Sears (Copake, NY/Taconic Hills) followed with a run-scoring single to left to create a two-run cushion.

Ten Eyck finished game two 2 for 5 with a run and four RBI. Herity went 2 for 5 with two runs and an RBI, while Servidone was 2 for 5 with two runs and an RBI. Caudle picked up the victory in relief, allowing two unearned runs on three hits in 5.0 innings. She struck out six and walked one.

Plimpton, who threw her second complete game shutout in game one, took the loss in game two, surrendering five runs (4 earned) on seven hits in 10.0 innings. She struck out six and walked five. Finley was the lone Saints batter with two hits in the nightcap.

Game one saw St. Lawrence score the only run of the game in the top of the fifth inning. Cooper's RBI-single up the middle scored sophomore Carly Dziekan (New York Mills, NY/New York Mills).

RPI's best chance to score came in the bottom of the fourth, when a Servidone single was followed by a double off the bat of Caudle. Plimpton got out of danger with a pair of shallow fly outs.

Plimpton allowed just four hits in 7.0 innings, striking out eight, while walking one. Weltzin threw a complete game for the Engineers, giving up a run on four hits. She struck out seven.

Rensselaer is back on the diamond on Wednesday, when it travels to Utica for a doubleheader (3:30pm). The Saints visit Hamilton for a pair on Tuesday (3:30pm).
