Women's Lacrosse Beaten in OT

TROY, N.Y. -- Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) got three goals late in regulation to send the game to overtime, but Vassar responded with the only three goals over overtime, as the Brewers defeated the Engineers, 11-8, in Liberty League women's lacrosse action on Friday afternoon at Renwyck Field. With the loss, RPI falls to 3-4 overall, with a 1-1 mark in league play, while Vassar improves to 4-3 on the seaosn, with a 2-1 record in the conference.

Vassar got out to an early 2-0 lead, as Brittany Botticelli (Commack, NY / Commack) scored on a free position shot at 21:48, followed by a goal by Julia Trudell (Newtown, CT / Newtown) at 19:04. Mackenzie O'Neil (Duxbury, MA / Milton Academy) got RPI on the boar with 17:06 to play in the first half, but the Brewers would score two more goals to push their lead to 4-1. Sydney Spadinger (Shelton, CT / Shelton) scored at 16:18, while Storm Sideleau (Hopkinton, NH / Kimball Union Academy) recorded a tally with 7:30 to play. Both goals were unassisted. Renssealer gave one last push at the end of the first half, and Meg Colitz (East Greenwich, RI / LaSalle Academy) scored an unassisted tally with just 1:39 to go, pulling the Engineers to within 4-2 at the halftime break.

Trudell scored her second of the day for the Brewers to start the second half, with the assist going to Botticelli at 28:11. Just over four minutes later, Jamie Wakefield (Windsor, CT / Windsor) scored an unassisted shot for the Engineers. Vassar scored the game's next two goals, both assisted by Hannah Cho (West Hartford, CT). Cho passed off to Trudell at 23:22, before helping Amelia Rivoir (Huntington Station, NY / Walt Whitman) with 16:20 left on the clock. Rensslaer responded with the next two scores, as Erin Riley (West Nyack, NY/ Clarkstown South) connected on a free position shot at 14:54, followed by Chelsea Brennan's first goal as an Engineer at11:56. Brennan (New York, NY / St. Bernard School) was assisted by Riley on the score.

Cho scored her second goal of the season to keep Vassar ahead, 8-5, with 11:10 left to play, but the next three goals would swing the score back in the RPI direction. Brennan scored on a free position shot with 9:43 on the clock, pulling the Engineers to within two goals. With 8:50 left, an errant Brewer pass back to goalkeeper Kate Pula (Washington Township, NJ / Immaculate Heart Academy) would find its way into the net, giving Renssealer a team goal to get the score within 8-7. Colitz scored her second of the day with just over seven minutes to go to tie the game. Both teams had chances in the late going, but neither could score, sending the game to overtime.

Vassar came away with all three scores in the extra period to seal up the win. Sideleau scored an unassisted tally with 4:16 to play, while Leigh Anne Baldwin (Simsbury, CT / Westminster School) scored on a free position shot with 3:15 on the clock to put the Brewers up by two. With just eight seconds left, Jacqueline Palma (Manhasset, NY / Manhasset Junior-Senior) took advantage of the open net, as the Engineers had pulled goalkeeper Erin Amarello (Griswold, CT / St. Bernard School) out into a defensive position, to set the final score.

RPI held a slight 19-18 shot advantage, while also winning 13-of-23 draw controls. Both teams picked up 13 ground balls in the game. Amarello stopped four opposing shots for the Engineers, while Pula recorded five saves between the pipes for the Brewers.

Rensselaer will return to action on Saturday, continuing Liberty League action, hosting Bard at Renwyck Field at 2 p.m. Vassar will also continue conference play on Saturday, traveling north to visit Skidmore, also at 2 p.m.
