Men's Soccer Now 5-0 After Shutout

Box Score | @RPIAthletics

STOCKTON, N.J. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team scored single goals in both halves and sophomore Ryan Nealon stopped a penalty in the 33rd minute as the Engineers defeated William Paterson University in the Seashore Classic hosted by Stockton University. RPI improves to 5-0, matching its best start since 2008 when that team also won its first five contests. The Pioneers, meanwhile, are now 2-3.

With Rensselaer ahead by a goal, William Paterson was awarded a penalty kick, which Nealon (Somers, NY / Somers) stopped. He finished with two saves - one in each half. Mike Villegas had two saves on the other end.

The Engineers took an early lead when Andrew Gondek (Ballston Spa, NY / Ballston Spa) headed home a corner feed from Paul Lentine (Penfield, NY / Penfield Senior) in the 14th minute. For Lentine, the point was his fifth (2 goals, 1 assist) in his last three games. Devon Baughen (Sarasota, FL / Pine View) made it 2-0 in the 73rd minute when he scored on a partial breakaway. The goal was his third of the season.

RPI, which has yet to play a home game, makes its East Campus Stadium debut on Wednesday night against Oneonta (7:30pm).
