FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Junior
Ali Zumpetta scored the equalizing goal and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team drew at Farmingdale State College, 1-1, in the final game of the Farmingdale State Tournament. With the tie, the Engineers move to 1-1-2 on the season, while the Rams stay unbeated at 2-0-1.
The hosts broke onto the scoreboard first, when junior Amanda Khare (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park) finished off an assist from classmate Ashley Guerrero (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) in the 26th minute. Farmingdale took that one-goal lead into halftime, despite being out-shot 6-4 by RPI.
Zumpetta (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) tied the game in the 67th minute, winning a battle in front of goal for her second tally of the season. Rensselaer continued to apply pressure late in regulation, but couldn't find a go-ahead goal.
RPI kept the momentum in the first of two overtimes, but Farmingdale fought back in the second session, registering four shots, including two on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper
Tori Riopelle (Ashburn, VA/Briar Woods) was equal to the task to secure the draw.
Riopelle finished with seven saves on the afternoon, while Farmingdale senior Brianna Blair (Littleton, CO/High Point Regional) had four stops.
