Women's Hockey Tripped Up at Mercyhurst, 3-1

Engineers fall to Lakers in series opener

ERIE, Pa. - Megan Whiddon had a two-point game, finishing with a goal and an assist, as the Mercyhurst women's ice hockey team earned a 3-1 non-conference victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Saturday at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. With the win, the Lakers improve to 9-7-3 overall, while the Engineers drop to 5-10-2.

Jenna Dingeldein and Sarah Hine also had goals for the Lakers. Hine's tally was the go-ahead score. Wining goaltender Sarah McDonnell finished with 14 saves.

Dingeldein's goal gave Mercyhurst a 1-0 lead in the first period. Whiddon had an assist on the play, feeding Dingeldein from behind the Engineer net.

Shayna Tomlinson scored RPI's only goal shortly into the second, evening the score at 1-1. Hine answered later in the period, getting an assist from Lauren Kilroy, to put the Lakers ahead for good.

Whiddon added an insurance goal for Mercyhurst in the third period. J'nai Mahadeo assisted that score, forcing a turnover in the RPI zone before giving the puck to Whiddon.

Goaltender Lovisa Selander had 19 saves for the Engineers.

Neither team scored on the power play; RPI was 0-for-6 while Mercyhurst went 0-for-5. the Lakers held a 22-15 shot advantage.

The same two squads will meet again on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
