Men's Hockey Settles for Split

Engineers defeated by RedHawks, 4-2

OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University men's hockey team scored three times in the third period to earn a 4-2 come-from-behind victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Sunday at Goggin Ice Center. With the win, the RedHawks improve to 6-10-2, while the Engineers drop to 11-7-3.

Miami got the scoring started at 2:01 of the first period, as senior Andrew Schmit (Grafton, WI) stuck home his second goal of the year. Assists went to junior Devin Loe (Weston, FL) and freshman Ryan Siroky (Mahattan Beach, CA).

The Engineers pulled even at 10:40 of the period on an unassisted breakaway tally by freshman Jesper Ohrvall (Halmstad, Sweden/Fairbank Ice Dogs). Picking up a bouncing puck just inside the Miami blue line, Ohrvall flew in and ripped a shot through the legs of RedHawks senior goaltender Jay Williams (McLean, VA).

RPI scored shorthanded to take a 2-1 lead at 13:08 of the second stanza. Junior Jimmy DeVito (Bloomingdale, IL/Lincoln Stars) found classmate Jake Wood (Georgetown, ON/Lincoln Stars) on the break and Wood stuck home his seventh goal of the year from close range.

The Engineers took their 2-1 lead into the third period, but the RedHawks came out firing in the final period to earn the comeback victory.

Senior Alex Gacek (Dracut, MA) tied the game at 2-2, 6:37 into the period, before junior Justin Greenberg (Dallas, TX) gave the hosts the lead for good, less than two minutes later (3-2).

Miami senior defenseman Chris Joyaux (Bloomingdale, IL) added an empty net goal with 25 seconds remaining to cap the scoring.

Rensselaer senior goaltender Jason Kasdorf (Winnipeg, MB/Des Moines Buccaneers) finished with 25 saves, while Williams had 17.
