TROY, N.Y. – Junior
Katie Rooney scored the game-winning goal 1:44 into overtime to lift the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 2-1 victory Cornell University, on Saturday at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 9-13-4 overall (7-7-2 ECAC Hockey), while the Big Red drop to 9-10-4 (5-7-4 ECAC Hockey).
Senior
Lauren Wash (Belle Mead, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) intercepted a pass at the Cornell blue line and feed a saucer pass from the right circle to Rooney (Buffalo, MN/Buffalo), who buried her second goal of the game and 11th of the season.
After a scoreless first period, the Big Red opened the scoring at 6:54 of the second, on an individual effort by senior Taylor Woods (Morden, MB/Canada U18). Battling for the puck along the boards, she drove to the front of the net and tucked a shot around RPI freshman netminder
Lovisa Selander (Sollentuna, Sweden/SDE Riksserien) for her sixth goal of the year.
The Engineers pulled even at 17:00 of the frame, when Rooney stole the puck in the neutral zone and skated around the Cornell net, before snapping a shot past Big Red junior goalie Paula Voorheis (Shanty Bay, ON/Aurora Junior Panthers).
RPI out-shot the Big Red 27-24, including 9-5 in the third period. The Engineers finished 0 for 2 on the power play, while Cornell was 0 for 1.
Selander (8-12-4) stopped 23 shots, while Voorheis (5-8-3) had 25 at the other end of the ice.

Katie Rooney continued her torrid scoring pace, netting two goals against the Big Red. She now has four goals and three assists in her last four games.
SERIES SWEEP:
RPI's season series sweep of Cornell is its first since the 2006-07 season.
