Women's Hockey Tops Cornell in OT

Katie Rooney's two goals propel Engineers past Big Red

TROY, N.Y. – Junior Katie Rooney scored the game-winning goal 1:44 into overtime to lift the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 2-1 victory Cornell University, on Saturday at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 9-13-4 overall (7-7-2 ECAC Hockey), while the Big Red drop to 9-10-4 (5-7-4 ECAC Hockey).

Senior Lauren Wash (Belle Mead, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) intercepted a pass at the Cornell blue line and feed a saucer pass from the right circle to Rooney (Buffalo, MN/Buffalo), who buried her second goal of the game and 11th of the season.

After a scoreless first period, the Big Red opened the scoring at 6:54 of the second, on an individual effort by senior Taylor Woods (Morden, MB/Canada U18). Battling for the puck along the boards, she drove to the front of the net and tucked a shot around RPI freshman netminder Lovisa Selander (Sollentuna, Sweden/SDE Riksserien) for her sixth goal of the year.

The Engineers pulled even at 17:00 of the frame, when Rooney stole the puck in the neutral zone and skated around the Cornell net, before snapping a shot past Big Red junior goalie Paula Voorheis (Shanty Bay, ON/Aurora Junior Panthers).

RPI out-shot the Big Red 27-24, including 9-5 in the third period. The Engineers finished 0 for 2 on the power play, while Cornell was 0 for 1.

Selander (8-12-4) stopped 23 shots, while Voorheis (5-8-3) had 25 at the other end of the ice.
