TROY, N.Y. – Freshman goaltender
Lovisa Selander stopped all 40 shots she faced to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a scoreless tie with fourth-ranked Quinnipiac University on Friday night at the Houston Field House. With the draw, the Engineers move to 5-10-4 overall (3-4-2 ECAC Hockey), while the Bobcats are now 16-1-4 (9-1-3 ECAC Hockey).
Selander (Sollentuna, Sweden/SDE Riksserien) made 13 saves in the first period, 12 in the second and 12 in the third, before stopping three in overtime. Her counterpart, Bobcats junior Sydney Rossman (Excelsior, MN/Minnetonka) had 15 saves, including six in the third.
Quinnipiac came close to scoring an early first period goal, when junior Emma Woods (Burford, ON/Cambridge Jr. Rivulettes) found the iron with a shot, just four minutes in. The Bobcats continued to put the pressure on, but Selander stood tall in net for the Engineers.
RPI found more room to work as the game wore on, registering five shots in the second period and six in the third. Junior
Laura Horwood (Belleville, ON/Durham West Lighting) turned in a pair of late changes in regulation that would have put the hosts on top. One came off a feed from senior
Alexa Gruschow (Mechanicburgh, PA/Washington Pride), while the other Horwood created after forcing a turnover in the offensive end.
The Engineers came out hard in overtime, but had their first three shot attempts miss the mark. Quinnipiac countered with a trio of shots, but Selander was able to turn them away to preserve the point in the league standings.
Rensselaer wound up 0 for 2 on the power play, while the Bobcats were 0 for 1.
