FRIDAY'S ACTION: The Engineers dropped a 73-65 decision at Union last night, while the Tigers opened its Liberty League slate with an 84-71 win at Skidmore.
THE STANDINGS: RPI has played the maximum number of games to date (3) and sits in a three-way tie for fifth place with a 1-2 record ... RIT has played only one game and is currently tied for second place ... The top four teams in the conference qualify for the league tournament in late February.
RPI AT UNION: William Hython had a double-double with 19 points and 16 rebounds as Union defeated Rensselaer, 73-65 ...
Tom Horvat had a game-high 23 points with four assists for the Engineers, who got 13 points from
Asa Barnhill ...
Marcus Giese led the guests, who shot 40 percent, with eight rebounds ... The Dutchmen led by 13 at halftime, 48-35, after a 12-3 run late in the first frame ... Union was up by 18 with 12:08 remaining, but RPI got to within 10 (58-48) after two free throws by
Andreas Kontopidis with 9:13 to play in the second half ... The Dutchmen built their lead to 15 with 2:26 left but back came the Engineers, pulling as close as eight at 71-63 with 36 seconds to play.
YOUTH MOVEMENT: The Engineers got 51 of their 65 points from either freshmen or sophomores on Friday ...

FIRST FOR TWO: Rensselaer has lost its last two games ... It is the first time this season the Engineers have fell in back-to-back contests.
UPCOMING: Following today's game, the Engineers play at Vassar on Tuesday ... They then enjoy a 10-day break from game action, returning to the court on January 22 against St. Lawrence here in Troy.
RIT AT SKIDMORE: RIT opened Liberty League play with an 84-71 victory against Skidmore, the defending Liberty League tournament champions, on Friday ... Kamron Davis led the way on offense for the Tigers, scoring 23 points on 8-for-12 shooting, adding six rebounds ... A.J. Horde scored 21 points, going 4-for-6 from beyond the arc, while Miguel Lopez and Troy Pierre-Louis both added 10 points ... RIT shot almost 56 percent from the field and went to the foul line 26 times, draining 19 attempts for a percentage of 73.
YOUNG GUNS: RIT's roster consists of four freshmen, seven sophomores, two juniors and two seniors ... RPI has six freshmen, one sophomore, two juniors and three seniors.
