RPI Athletics on TwitterTROY, N.Y. - The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) men's basketball team shot nearly 51 percent from the field, including 13 three-point baskets, and the Tigers defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 76-53, in a Liberty League game at East Campus Arena. Four players reached double figures for the visitors, who improve to 6-5 overall and 2-0 in conference play. The Engineers fall to 7-6 and 1-3.
RIT connected on 16 of 30 shots (53.3%) from the floor in the first half and 13 of 27 (48.1%) in the second on its way to victory. The Tigers held a 40-23 lead at halftime, battling back from a 7-3 deficit to go ahead by 15 points, 31-16, with just under six minutes to play. Sophomores Troy Pierre-Louis (Providence, RI / Berkshire School), A.J. Horde (Oak Park, MI / University of Detroit Jesuit) and Mitch Herman (Webster, NY / Webster Schroeder) led the comeback with seven, seven and six points, respectively, in that span.
Herman finished with a game-high 18 points on 6 of 9 shooting, all from behind the arc, along with six rebounds. Horde had 16 points with three rebounds and a game-high six assists, while Pierre-Louis scored 12 points on 4 of 5 shooting. Kamron Davis (Syracuse, NY / Nottingham), a senior, added 10 points and Sheldon Clay (Detroit, MI / University of Detroit Jesuit) led all players with 11 rebounds.
RPI put two players in double figures, both with a dozen points. Senior
Tyler Gendron (Merrimack, NH / Merrimack) had 12 points with four rebounds, while freshman
Tom Horvat (Cranston, RI / Providence Country Day) matched him in scoring. Horvat also had three rebounds, an assist and two steals. Freshman
Marcus Giese (Franklin, MA / Franklin) came off the bench to score nine points and grab five rebounds.
Rensselaer travels to league foe Vassar College on Tuesday (8pm), while the Tigers host Union College the same night. Both games are league contests.
