TROY, N.Y. – Maddy Field scored twice and Kassidy Sauve stopped all 33 shots she faced, as the Ohio State University women's hockey team defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 2-0 on the year, while the Engineers drop to 1-3.
Field (Oakville, ON) got the visitors on the board at 19:25 of the first period, corralling a breakaway pass from freshman Samantha Bouley (Sittsville, ON) and beating RPI sophomore goaltender
Lovisa Selander (Sollentuna, Sweden/SDE Riksserien) five-hole. A second helper was credited to sophomore Jacyn Reeves (Holmen, WI).
Rensselaer took a penalty after the goal and the Buckeyes capitalized early in the second stanza, as Field's scored on a deflection in front of goal. Freshman Jincy Dunne (O'Fallon, MO) worked the puck from the right point to Jessica Dunne (O'Fallon, MO) on the left, where she let loose with a shot that Field tipped home from just outside the crease.
Freshman
Sabrina Repaci (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros), who scored RPI's only goal on Friday, led the team with six shots in the contest, but she and her teammates were unable to solve Sauve, who made a combined 29 saves in the just the first two periods.
Ohio State was able to clamp down defensively in the third and wound up out-shooting the Engineers 8-4 in the period. If not for a tremendous defensive effort from RPI freshman
Kendra Farole (Irvine, CA/Anaheim Lady Ducks) the Buckeyes would have pushed their advantage to 3-0 midway through the third. Helping out Selander, who had made a sprawling save, Farole blocked three shots while standing on her own goal line, keeping it a two-score game.
RPI took a pair of late penalties in the third, which hampered their comeback efforts. The Engineers out-shot Ohio State 33-23, but finished 0 for 7 on the power play, while the Buckeyes were 1 for 3.
Selander (1-3) had 21 saves compared to 33 for Sauve, who posted a combined 67 stops on the weekend.
The Engineers hit the road next weekend for a two-game series at Robert Morris. Ohio State jumps right into WCHA play, when they travel to Wisconsin for two.
