CASTLETON, Vt. – Freshman goalkeeper
Joey Lyons recorded her school record 10th shutout of the season as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team battled to a scoreless draw with Castleton University on Tuesday, in a non-conference match at Spartan Stadium. The Engineers are now 13-3-1, while the Spartan move to 7-7-5.
Lyons stopped all six shots she faced in the contest, and five RPI players tallied four shot attempts or more in the contest. She passes RPI Athletics Hall of Famer Laura Gregor '00, who had nine shutouts in her freshman season of 1996.
Jessica Binkowski had seven saves in her fourth shutout of the season, while Eva Clark had five shots and Bronwen Hopood had four in the scoreless contest.
After an uneventful opening frame, both offenses came out in search of a goal in the second half. Castleton had its first look in the 59th minute, when Marissa Benson found Izzy Hutnak at the edge of the 18-yard box. Hutnak settled the ball and took a left-footed drive, but Lyons leaped up and knocked the ball over the crossbar to thwart the threat.
Rensselaer had a chance to take a lead late, when in the 81st minute
Jacqui Richard sent a cross into the box in search of an Engineer teammate.
Cori Winslow made a run at the back post, but just missed connecting as the ball went wide of the net and out of harm's way, sending the game to overtime still scoreless.
After a scoreless first overtime period, the Spartans again had a prime scoring chance, as Makenzi Bellando dribbled the ball up the field in transition. The freshman settled the ball at the edge of the box and took a left-footed shot that missed just outside the left post to keep the game knotted at 0-0, a score that held to the final whistle.
RPI outshot Castleton 27-14 overall in the contest, including a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. The Engineers had nine corner kicks to Castleton's four, while Castleton had seven fouls to RPI's four.
Castleton hits the road on Sunday for the quarterfinal round of the North Atlantic Conference Championship Tournament at Maine Maritime (1:30pm). Rensselaer concludes its Liberty League schedule at Skidmore on Thursday (7pm).
