Men's Soccer Ties Saint Thomas Aquinas

Despite early chances, Engineers settle for scoreless draw

TROY, N.Y. - Freshman goalkeeper Matt LaBranche recorded his sixth straight shutout as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw with Saint Thomas Aquinas College, in non-league action at East Campus Stadium on Saturday. With the tie, the Engineers are now 8-6-4, while the Spartans move to 8-4-5.

The Engineers were unable to capitalize on a number of first half chances, including a few that came right in front of the Saint Thomas Aquinas net.

Freshman Dillon Ashong chipped Spartans keeper Jack Nicholson in the second minute, but his attempt hit the left upright. Ashong then had a second chance denied by Nicholson, six minutes later.

Senior Devon Baughen was stopped point blank after getting on the end of a cross in the 21st minute. Following a Baughen corner, freshman Brandon Pirog saw his volley blocked by the defense.

Joel Ahearne-Ray had RPI's best chance in the opening half, but his right-footed try found the keeper from 10 yards out.

In the second half, freshman Austin Betterly delivered a cross to the far post for Baughen, but he got under his 57th minute attempt and it flew over the bar.

Saint Thomas Aquinas held a 6-5 edge in shots in the two overtime periods, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.

Aiden Tansey made five saves in 65 minutes of work in goal for the Spartans, while Nicholson had three. Matt LaBranche registered two stops for the Engineers, playing all 110 minutes.

The Engineers are back in action next week for the Liberty League Tournament (TBD).
