SLU Tops Men's Hockey, 3-1

Saints score early in second and third periods for road ECAC Hockey win

TROY, N.Y. – The St. Lawrence University men's hockey team scored three goals in a span of four shots to top Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 3-1, on Saturday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Saints improve to 6-4-2 overall (3-0-1 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 2-8-1 (1-5-0 ECAC Hockey).

After a scoreless first period, St. Lawrence did not take long to break onto the board in the second, as senior defenseman Gavin Bayreuther (Canaan, NH/Fargo) drilled a shot from the blue line past RPI sophomore netminder Chase Perry (Andover, MN/Wenatchee Wild). The tally, which came just 31 seconds into the frame, was assisted on by freshman Carson Gicewicz (Orchard Park, NY/Sioux Falls) and junior Mike Marnell (South Huntington, NY/Des Moines).

The Saints doubled their lead two minutes later, when senior Eric Sweetman (Woodbine, MD/Youngstown) was credited for his second goal of the year, after his wide attempt caromed off the end wall and snuck behind Perry at the left post. Helpers on the goal, which was scored at 2:32 of the second, went to juniors Nolan Gluchowski (Wixom, MI/Sioux Falls) and Marnell.

Junior Joe Sullivan (Las Vegas, NV/Indiana) pushed the visitors' advantage to 3-0, 16 seconds into the third, taking a cross-ice feed from sophomore Jacob Prichard (Macomb, MI/Powell River) and one-timing past Rensselaer sophomore goaltender Cam Hackett (Sault Ste. Marie, ON/Lincoln Stars) from between the circles. Gluchowski earned the second assist on Sullivan's sixth goal of the year.

RPI netted its lone tally at 3:10 of the third period, taking advantage of a loose puck in the offensive zone. Senior captain Riley Bourbonnais (Rochester, NY/Lincoln Stars) whipped a pass to freshman Patrick Polino (Buffalo, NY/Lincoln Stars), who fired a low hard shot, past SLU junior goalie Kyle Hayton (Denver, CO/Sioux City) and inside the left post for his first collegiate tally.

Hayton (6-3-2) finished with 27 saves, while Perry (1-7-1) had six, before giving way to Hackett early in the second period. Hackett had 11 stops, including 10 in the third. RPI finished 1 for 3 on the power play, while the Saints went 0 for 7.

The Engineers return to action next weekend, when they host Ohio State for a two-game series at the Houston Field House. Puck drop for games on Friday and Saturday are both set for 7pm. St. Lawrence hosts Yale and Brown next weekend.
