CASTINE, ME - Four players reached double-figures for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's basketball, which defeated the University of Maine-Presque Isle, 88-46, on Saturday afternoon in the Consolation Game of the Pepsi Mariner Classic. With the win, the Engineers improve to 2-1, while the Owls drop to 0-3.
The Engineers received 49 points from its bench, including a game and season-high 17 from freshman
Ines Ortea, who went 6 for 6 from the field, including 1 for 1 from three-point range. Sophomore
Sam Krumbhaar added 14 points and four assists, while senior
Lauren Young recorded 10 points and a team-high six rebounds.
Sydney Churchill led the Owls with 15 points on 6 of 16 shooting. Emilia Churchill added nine points, while Amanda Hotham had six points, four rebounds and three assists.
Rensselaer never trailed in the contest and limited Maine-Presque Isle to 33.3% shooting from the field. RPI also held a substancial 30-2 advantage in points in the paint and turned the Owls' 27 turnovers into 25 points at the other end.
After jumping out to a 26-16 lead after one quarter, the Engineers used a 21-6 second stanza to take a 47-22 lead into halftime.Â
The Engineers held the Owls to 30.0% shooting in the second half to secure the victory.
Rensselaer returns to action on Tuesday, when it hosts Sage College at East Campus Arena (6pm). Maine-Presque Isle hosts Central Maine CC on Wednesday (12pm).
