TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore Kendall Cornine had a hand in all three goals to lead the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) women's hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Saturday at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Tigers improve to 3-15-0, while the Engineers drop to 5-12-1.
The visitors scored the only goal of the first period, just 2:50 into the frame. Freshman Jade Mancini netted her second of the season, from Cornine (Kinnelon, NJ/East Coast Wizards) and Reagan Rust (McKinney, TX/Pittsburgh Penguins Elite).
RPI had a number of opportunities to pull even late in the second, including a one-timer by senior
Hannah Behounek (Minnetonka, MN/Minnetonka High School) at 17:16 that just skimmed wide of the right post from inside the right circle.
The hosts kept up the offensive pressure over the final three minutes of the frame, but could not sneak a puck past RIT sophomore netminder Jenna de Jonge (Abbotsford, BC/Pursuit of Excellence), who turned away all 14 Engineers shots in the stanza.
RIT doubled its lead at 7:32 of third, breaking into the offensive zone 2-on-0. Cornine elected to take the shot herself and beat Rensselaer sophomore goaltender
Lovisa Selander (Sollentuna, Sweden/SDE Riksserien) stick side. Helpers went to sophomores Rust and Brinna Dochniak (Marine On St. Croix, MN/Minnesota Blades).
Rensselaer cut the deficit in half at 12:10, when sophomore
Taylor Schwalbe (Anchorage, AK/Shattuck St. Mary's) backhanded home her second goal of the season from right in front of the crease. Junior
Shayna Tomlinson (Gilford, NH/Assabet Valley) was credited with the lone assist.
Senior
Laura Horwood (Belleville, ON/Durham West Lightning) turned in RPI's best chance to tie the game with four minutes to go, when she received pass from behind the net, but her shot was stopped by de Jonge.
Senior Cassie Clayton (Pickering, ON/Missassauga Chiefs) added an empty-netter with 14 seconds remaining to seal the victory.
Selander (5-10-1) had 20 saves for the Engineers, while de Jonge (1-3-0) had 31 stops. RPI went 0 for 7 on the power play and the Tigers were 1 for 3.
The Engineers return to the ice next weekend, when they host Princeton and No. 8 Quinnipiac on Friday (6pm) and Saturday (3pm), respectively. RIT plays a home-and-home conference series with Syracuse on Friday and Saturday, beginning on the road.
