Pride Holds Off Women's Basketball

Box Score Box Score | RPI Fanshop

WORCESTER, Mass. - Springfield senior Ava Adamopoulos (Ludlow, MA) led all student-athletes with 25 points and earned All-Classic honors as the Pride held off Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 85-79 on Sunday at the WPI Thanksgiving Classic in Harrington Auditorium.

Adamopoulos, who averaged 19 points, 10.5 rebounds and two blocks, was joined on the All-Tournament Team by RPI junior Kate Goodell (Shaftsbury, VT), who stuffed the stat sheet with seven points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists on Sunday.

Adamopoulos put the Pride up by 21 to open the fourth, from there the Engineers, keyed by a three and a jumper by sophomore Sam Krumbhaar (Glen Burnie, MD), went on a 10-0 run. The outburst was capped by a three-point play by junior Shaina Iton (Peekskill, NY) with 8:12 to play.

RPI sophomore LaKissa Martin (Las Vegas, NV) later cut the deficit to nine (68-59) with a jumper at 5:29. Iton then converted a traditional three-point play to make it a six-point (71-65) game with 3:50 remaining. Senior Lauren Young (Kirkwood, MO) canned a pair of freebies to get the Engineers within four at 3:05, and again on the back end of a pair at :47. Springfield hit seven of its eight free throws down the stretch to close out the game.

Springfield took the first quarter by an 18-12 count and never looked back. After the Pride built a 20-point lead behind a 3-pointer by senior Molly McCausland (Millbury, MA) at 8:33 in the third, Martin went on a personal four-point run. With 1:59 left in the stanza, Goodell used a layup to bring the Engineers within 14.

In addition to Adamopoulos, four of the five Pride starters reached double-digits as freshman Alex Goslin (South Windsor, CT) had 14. Sophomore Chelsea McAllister (Baltimore, VT) and McCausland each chipped in with 10 while senior Lexi Windwer (Milton, MA) came off the bench to contribute a dozen. McCausland also led Springfield with eight rebounds and five assists.

Iton posted a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds to go with a 19 points form Krumbhaar and 17 by Martin. Young also had a baker's dozen and added seven helpers for the Engineers. Goodell and Iton were credited with three swipes apiece.

Both teams are home for their next contests. RPI (3-3) entertains Keene State Tuesday at 6pm and Springfield (2-2) hosts Wellesley in its NEWMAC opener Saturday at noon.
