GENEVA, N.Y. – The first-ranked William Smith College women's soccer team scored two goals in each half en route to a 4-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), in the Liberty League Championship Game on Saturday at Cozzens Field. With the win, the Herons improve to 18-0, while the Engineers drop to 14-5-1.
Rensselaer held its own in the early stages of the game, including earning the game's first corner kick in just the second minute. Freshman
Jacqui Richard (Southwick, MA/Westminster School) delivered a dangerous ball to the back post, but the ball was deflected out for a goal kick.
The Herons stuck for their first goal in the ninth minute, when junior Evie Manning (Lytham, England/St. Bedes) flicked a shot into the right side netting off of a cross from sophomore Kristina Camaj (Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale).
William Smith doubled its lead in the 24th minute on Manning's second tally of the year. A cross from the right flank by junior Lauren Kogelmann (Slingerlands, NY/Guilderland) skipped all the way through the RPI penalty area to Manning, who beat her mark to the ball and slotted home a shot just past the dive of Rensselaer freshman goalkeeper
Joey Lyons (Harwood, MD/Southern).
RPI started the second half in a similar manner to the first generating the first two chances of the stanza. Junior
Stephanie May (Windham, NH/Central Catholic) nearly brought the visitors to within a goal in the 47th minute, but her attempt was blocked by the defense.
Moments later, Richard made a driving run up the middle of the field, but her right-footed strike curled wide right of goal.
Camaj put the Herons up 3-0 in the 57th minute, turning and firing past Lyons from 10 yards out. Senior Kara Shue (Fairport, NY/Fairport) was credited with the assist on Camaj's fifth of the year.
William Smith then capped the scoring in the 82nd minute, as senior Shay Callahan (Holland Patent, NY/Holland Patent) tapped in a close range chance from classmates Brie Ruane (Roslyn Harbor, NY/North Shore) and Lauren Randaccio (Williamsville, NY/Nichols School).
The league championship is the 10th straight for the Herons, who earn the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, which begins next week.
May, Richard, Lyons and
Cori Winslow (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) were all named to the Liberty League All-Tournament Team, along with Kogelmann, Manning, Ruane, Shue, Bridget Westerman, Emma Diehl and Theresa Lohr from William Smith.
