TROY, N.Y. – Freshman goaltender
Lovisa Selander made 42 saves to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey earn an important point from a 1-1 tie with Harvard University, on Friday at the Houston Field House. With the draw, the Engineers move to 9-14-6 (7-8-4 ECAC Hockey), while the Crimson are now 14-9-3 (10-6-3 ECAC Hockey).
Selander (Sollentuna, Sweden/SDE Riksserien) made 14 saves in each of the second and third periods, before stopping all four Harvard shots in overtime to preserve the draw. Harvard senior goalie Emerance Maschmeyer (Bruderheim, AB/Lloydminster) had 25 saves, including 11 in the third.
RPI broke onto the scoreboard first at 5:04 of the second period. Sophomore
Shayna Tomlinson (Gilford, NH/Assabet Valley) tapped in a loose puck that was sitting in the Harvard crease for her fourth goal of the season. Assists went to junior
Laura Horwood (Belleville, ON/Durham West Lightning) and senior
Alexa Gruschow (Mechanicburgh, PA/Washington Pride).
The Crimson drew even at 15:06 of the frame, on an unassisted tally by freshman Grace Zarzecki (Chicago, IL/Whitney Young Magnet). A giveaway by the Engineers at the side of the net allowed Zarezecki to bury her eighth of the year, from close range.
Harvard out-shot the Engineers 14-11 in the third period and 4-1 in overtime, but neither team was able find the go-ahead goal.
Rensselaer was 0 for 1 on the power play, while the Crimson, who had 1:49 of man advantage time in the extra session, went 0 for 2.
BIG POINT:
The tie for the Engineers kept them two points clear of Cornell for the eighth and final playoff spot in ECAC Hockey. RPI holds the tiebreak over the Big Red, having beaten them twice during the regular season.
