RPI FanshopTROY, N.Y. - Sophomore Ariella Rosenthal scored 14 first half points and 16 in the second half to lead the Vassar College women's basketball team to an 88-74 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in the season finale for both teams. The Brewers finish with a 10-15 overall record and a 7-9 Liberty League mark, while the Engineers fall to 8-17 and 4-12.
Rosenthal (Mill Valley, CA / Redwood), a guard, made 12 of 24 shots from the field and 6 of 8 free throws for her 30 points, which nearly doubled her per game average (15.5) entering the contest. She also had seven rebounds and an assist in 36 minutes for Vassar, which went 6-2 in its last eight games.
Rensselaer opened the game with a 20-17 lead after the first quarter and increased the margin to seven points, 43-36, at halftime behind 10 first half points from
Sam Krumbhaar (Glen Burnie, MD / North County) and nine from
LaKissa Martin (Las Vegas, NV / Rancho). The Engineers made 15 of 35 shots (42.9%) from the field, including 5 of 12 (41.7%) from three-point range, while holding the Brewers to 37.8 percent (14 of 37) from the field.
The game turned in the latter stages of the third quarter when Vassar scored 15 of the final 19 points of the frame. Rosenthal tied the score at 52-52 with a jumper with 3:22 remaining and then gave the visitors a 54-52 lead 1:03 later. A
Caitlin Drakeley (Woodbury, CT / Nonnewaug) basket with three seconds later put the Brewers ahead by six, 60-54, with 10 minutes to play.
Rensselaer scored the first two baskets of the fourth quarter for a 60-58 deficit, but Vassar answered by scoring 12 of the next 18 points for a 72-64 lead with 3:58 to play. Rosenthal and Serafini both had four points in that stretch. A three-point basket by RPI freshman
Elizabeth Eckhardt (Albany, NY / Guilderland) pulled RPI to within five points, 74-69, with 2:55 to go, but a 6-0 run by the Brewers gave them an 11-point lead with 1:14 showing on the clock. Rensselaer got to within eight points on two occasions after that point, but could get no closer.
For the Engineers, who shot just 27.9 percent (12 of 43) in the second half, Krumbhaar scored 19 points with five rebounds and two assists. Martin finished with 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds, along with three steals in 15 minutes. Three student-athletes played their final games for Rensselaer.
Ellen Boucher (Williston, VT / Rice Memorial) scored eight points with five rebounds, three assists and a steal;
Ashley Clough (West Chesterfield, NH / Keene) had seven points, eight rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal; and
Bailei Tetrault (Cohoes, NY / Cohoes) had two points, four rebounds and three assists.
Rosenthal was one of four in double digits in points for the visitors, which made 45.6 percent (31 of 68) of its shots. Senior Caitlin Drakeley (Woodbury, CT / Nonnewaug) scored 16 points with eight rebounds, along with two assists and a block in her final collegiate contest. Rose Serafini (Milton, ON / Milton District), another senior, added 13 points, eight rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals and Nicole Teta (Maspeth, NY / Archbishop Molloy) scored 10 points.
