CANTON, N.Y. - Cara Waterson and Jenny Scudder both scored 18 points and the St. Lawrence University (SLU) women's basketball team made 20 of 24 free throws in defeating Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) 79-70 in a Liberty League contest. The Saints improve to 15-6 overall and 8-4 in the Liberty League, while the Engineers fall to 5-15 and 1-10. 

Following a first quarter that ended in a 15-15 deadlock, SLU outscored RPI by 10 points, 20-10, in the second quarter. The Saints bumped that advantage to 17 points (48-31) midway through the third, but the Engineers scored the final 10 points of the frame to cut the deficit to seven. LaKissa Martin made a three-point basket, Lauren Young scored on a jumper and Elizabeth Eckhardt had a three pointer and a layup in the span. 

St. Lawrence answered to open the fourth quarter, scoring the first seven points for a 14-point edge, and the Saints held a double-digit lead until Eckhardt made a three-point shot with 1:12 remaining to trim the margin to nine points, 72-63. SLU continued to make its free throws - the Saints were 15 of 18 in the final 2:22 - to offset three-point baskets by Sam Krumbhaar and Bailei Tetrault

The Engineers were led in scoring by Martin, who scored a game-high 21 points with 10 rebounds in 23 minutes. Krumbhaar scored 17 points with two rebounds and four assists and Eckhardt had 10 points and four rebounds. All three are freshmen. Shaina Iton, a sophomore, added four points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Waterson made 5 of 8 shots from the floor and 8 of 10 from the free throw line for her 18 points. She also had five rebounds and two assists. Scudder was 6 of 9 and 4 of 4 with a team-best nine rebounds in 22 minutes. Lauren Quattrocchi also reached double figures in points, scoring 10, along with seven rebounds and a game-high seven assists.

St. Lawrence, which is in third place in the league standings. returns to the court on Friday at league-leading Rochester Institute of Technology. The Engineers host Bard College on Tuesday in a conference matchup. Both games begin at 6pm.
