LAKE MYRTLE, Fla. – The Stockton University baseball team score six runs in to the top of the first inning, en route to a 17-5 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Sunday at Chain of Lakes Park. With the win, the Ospreys improve to 1-3 on the season, while the Engineers drop to 1-7.
Stockton plated six runs (1 earned) on five hits in the first inning. Three straight run-scoring base hits up the middle, after two were away, aided the rally. Bryce DiPaola had one of those hits – a two-RBI single that he chopped over the mound.
The Engineers got two back quickly in the bottom half of the inning, as junior
Thomas Desmond launched his second home run of the season over the fence in right. The two-run shot came with
Yahriel Jimenez, who drew a walk, on first base.
An RBI-single off the bat of Zach Gustites gave the Ospreys a 7-2 lead in the third inning, before Nick LaPorta hit his first homer of the season – an opposite field solo drive to right, which made it 8-2.
The Ospreys put up seven runs in the eighth to put the game away. The inning was highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of Stephen Struble.
RPI came back with three in the bottom of the frame, which included a two-run double by sophomore Evan Meister, which scored
Sean Welling and
J.T. Sawyer.
Stockton picked up two more runs in the ninth, as a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly made it 17-5.
Desmond finished 2 for 4 with a run and two runs batted in, while senior
Chris Holomakoff was 3 for 3. Senior
Greg Echeverria had a hit in first collegiate at bat.
Dan Sweeney went 4 for 6 with two runs and three RBI for the Ospreys, while LaPorta was 4 for 5 with three runs and an RBI.
