CLERMONT, Fla. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team earned two more win on Thursday in Florida, topping SUNY Geneseo (3-0) and Smith (6-5). With the wins, the Engineers are now 9-1 on the year.
In Game 1,
Stephanie Caudle held Geneseo to only three hits, leading to the 3-0 victory. Alyssa Persich had one of the Knights' hits, giving her at least one in each of her eight games this season.
Rensselaer scored early, putting two on the board in the first and one in the second off first-year starter Taylor Moore (2-1). Caudle helped her own cause with a two-run double to center.
Devan Puhl added a third run in the second on an infield single that brought home
Rebecca Kienz.
The Knights' offense went down in order until the top of the sixth, when Persich had team's first base hit of the game. With another runner on board by an Engineer error, Geneseo had an opportunity to cut into the lead, but left two on base.
The Knights had another chance in the seventh after Krok and Mikayla Moore started the inning with back-to-back singles, but both were left aboard as Rensselaer closed out the shutout by retiring the next three hitters.
RPI once again got out to a fast start in Game 2 on the day, scoring in the top of the first inning, as a pair of singles to lead off the game and a stolen base put two in scoring position with no outs.Â
Taylor Ten Eyck flew out to straightaway right field, and
Morgan Kollmeier slid home ahead of the throw to put the Engineers in front 1-0.
The Pioneers plated two in the bottom of the frame, thanks to a two-run homer off the bat of Ally Snyder.
The third inning saw the bats come alive for both teams as RPI and Smith exchanged three-run frames. A Kollmeier single to short left, Caudle single to center, and Herity single to left drove in the three runs for the Engineers and set the Pioneers behind 4-2 before Smith answered with five hits of their own in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-4 lead.
Caudle again came through for RPI in the top of the fourth with a two-out double for two RBIs before Rowan Turner entered the circle for the Pioneers, where she allowed only one baserunner after the first batter she faced singled.
With Turner holding the deficit at one, Smith went to work against RPI reliever Caudle, creating their best opportunity to draw level in the bottom of the fifth. After Lydia DeAngelo reached on an error, Turner doubled down the left field line and Burchat walked to load the bases with no outs. But a comebacker to the pitcher was sent home to retire the lead runner and with one out, RPI shortstop
Kacie Herity snared a Kushner liner on a full-extension dive up the middle, flipping to second for a double play to end the threat and preserve the win.
The Engineers conclude their Spring Trip on Friday, when they face Ithaca in a doubleheader (9am).
