MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Junior Fracnesca Verrone scored four times while senior Alexa DiPiero added three goals and two assists as Montclair State jumped out to seven-goal lead in the first half before going on to a 16-8 win over Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon.
Lindsay Lare registered three goals for MSU, which led 10-3 at halftime en route to its fifth win of the season (5-3).
Morgan Doyle scored three times for the Engineers (4-2), who had their two-game winning streak snapped with the loss.
Montclair put the first three goals on the board as Chelsea Orban tallied the first five minutes into the contest. Kara Crampton followed with two goals in a 17-second span for the 3-0 lead. The teams traded the next five goals before the Red Hawks closed out the first half with the final five scores.
Lare scored unassisted with 8:55 left and then fed Maguire 52 seconds later making the score 7-3. DiPiero added her first with 3:26 left with Crampton getting her third less than a minute later before DiPiero's goal with 1:41 to play sent MSU into halftime up 10-3.
RPI started the second half strong finding the back of the net three times in the first three minutes, including the last by
Maddy Aslansan cutting the lead to 10-6. DiPiero ended that run with a power-play score with 21:03 to go and then assisted on Verron's goal two minutes later helping the Red Hawks to a 12-6 advantage.
The Engineers crept back within 12-8 on a Doyle goal with 9:30 left however Lare ignited a four-goal game-ending run by Montclair. Lare and Verrone each had two in the spurt.
Senior goalkeeper Rebecca Myers stopped six shots for MSU. Maguire and Orban (goal, 2 assists) recorded five and four draws respectively.
Rensselaer is back in action next Friday and Saturday, when it hosts Union and William Smith at 4pm and 2pm, respectively.
