ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) baseball team used two late-inning rallies to sweep a Liberty League doubleheader with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Saturday. With wins of 3-2 and 4-3, the Tigers improve to 11-11 (6-4 Liberty League), while the Engineers drop to 9-18 (8-6 Liberty League).
Game 1 saw RIT break onto the board first, scoring a run in the bottom of the fourth on a groundout by Taylor Hogan.
The Engineers answered, as sophomore
Christian Spagnuola plated a pair in the top of the fifth after singling to right to bring home
J.T. Sawyer and
Ethann Meister.
RIT battled back to take a 3-2 lead in the sixth on an RBI-single by Brian Battaglia and a wild pitch.
Rory Little (2-3) was able to go the distance for the Tigers, allowing two runs on five hits in 7.0 innings. He struck out five without a walk. RPI senior
Stephen Schiavone (3-3) gave up three runs on six hits in 6.0 innings. He notched three strikeouts and two walks.
Meister, who finished the opener 1 for 3 with a run scored, tied the school's single-season record, when he extended his hitting streak to 20 games. He matched Kyle LaVigne '12 mark from 2012.
In Game 2, RIT took a 2-0 lead into the top of the eighth, when the Engineers rallied for three runs to take the lead (3-2). Freshman
Tyler Stephens singled with one out, before Spagnuola was hit by a pitch. After a flyout,
Sam Lawrence reached on an infield single to load the bases. Pinch hitter
Jason Ramos followed with a double to the gap in right center, clearing the bases.
Neither team was able to capitalize in the ninth send the game to extra innings.
RPI managed just one baserunner - a walk to Stephens in the 10th - before the Tigers put together a game-ending bottom of the 11th.
A single and a sacrifice bunt put a runner in scoring position with one away. A strikeout and back-to-back walks loaded the bases, before Gorman delivered a walk-off single to right.
Senior starter
Greg Echeverria (2-5) who pitched into the 10th, took the loss, surrendering four runs (3 earned) on nine hits. He struck out four without a walk. Freshman Jameson Moran (2-0) picked up the win in relief, tossing a perfect 11th.
Both teams are back in action tomorrow for a doubleheader (1pm).
