Stephen Schiavone tossed a complete game and junior
Jason Ramos drove in three runs to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to an 8-2 win over Bard College in Game 1 of a Liberty League doubleheader on Saturday. The Engineers, who dropped Game 2, 11-6, are now 4-15 overall (3-3 Liberty League), while Raptors move to 6-11 (1-1 Liberty League).
Schiavone allowed two runs on eight hits in 7.0 innings to prove to 2-2 on the year. He struck out two and walked one. Bard starter Steve Marotta (1-3) gave up eight runs (3 earned) on seven hits in 5.1 innings. He had one strikeout and two walks
RPI's bats got going early, as the visitors plated two runs in the first an four in the second for a 6-0 lead.
Ethann Meister delivered a two-run single in the opening frame, before Ramos drove home two with a double in the second.
Bard fought back with single runs in the bottom of the second and third.
The Engineers got the two runs back in the top of the sixth, when
Thomas Desmond lifted a sacrifice fly to center and Ramos pulled a single to left, scoring
Weston Hawkins.
In Game 2, Bard scored five runs in the bottom of the first and withstood a comeback attempt from RPI to earn the doubleheader split.
RPI scored a run in the second, two in the third and one more in the fourth to draw within 5-4. A four-run bottom of inning pushed the Raptors' advantage to 9-4.
J.T. Sawyer and
Matt Lawrence each came through with RBI-singles in the fifth to make it a 9-6 game, but Bard came back with single runs in the seventh and eighth to put the game away.
Senior
Greg Echeverria (1-4) suffered the loss for the Engineers, allowing eight runs (6 earned) on six hits in 3.1 innings. He struck out three and walked four.
Zach Hayes (1-1) went 5.0 innings in relief to earn the victory for the Raptors. He gave up one run on four hits with a strikeout.
Both teams are back in action on Monday, when they square off in a doubleheader at Robison Field (2pm).
