Softball and Utica Split Twin Bill

Engineers walk off in opener, 5-4, before falling 12-9

TROY, N.Y. - Stephanie Caudle delivered a walk-off single for a 5-4 win in Game 1, but the Utica College softball team came back to beat Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 12-9, in the nightcap. With the split, the Engineers move to 26-8 overall, while the Pioneers are now 22-14.

Game 1 was scoreless until the top of the sixth, when Utica plated four runs on three hits and an error. A double-steal opened the scoring with Kimberly Beattie coming home. Cassie Smith followed with an RBI-single, before two more runs came across on an error.

The Engineers answered with a three-run bottom half of the inning, which began with a fielder's choice grounder from Morgan Ten Eyck. Kacie Herity then came through with a two-run single to draw the hosts within 4-3.

Back-to-back doubles from Morgan Kollmeier and Devan Puhl tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh. After a strikeout, Caudle hammered a 1-0 pitch into the right field corner, plating the winning run.

Freshman Stephanie Deeb (4-2) earned the win in relief, throwing 1.2 perfect innings, with one strikeout. Caudle, who started in the circle, allowed four runs (2 earned) on three hits in 5.1 innings. She stuck out three and walked four.

In Game 2, the Pioneers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after just two innings. Smith hit a three-run home run to left in the first, before Alysa Russell hit a solo homer in the second.

An RBI-double by Herity in the third made it 4-1. Puhl backed that up with a two-run single to bring home Rebecca Kienz and Herity and draw RPI within 4-3.

Utica then posted back-to-back three-run frames to take 10-3 lead after five innings. Smith highlighed the rally with a two-run single.

After the Pioneers made it 12-4, the Engineers plated six runs on six hits in the bottom of the sixth. Courtney McArthur hit her team-leading fourth home run with two aboard to start the frame. An infield single by Kollmeier drove in the fourth run, before Puhl scored two more with a single to center.

Abby Monroe (11-6) earned the win, allowing six runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings. Victoria Hepworth (8-2) was saddled with the loss, surrendering four runs (3 earned) on three hits in 2.0 innings.

The Engineers are back in action on Saturday, when they visit Skidmore in their final Liberty League doubleheader of the regular season (1pm). Utica visits Nazareth on Sunday (1pm).
