Baseball Splits with Vassar

Schiavone tosses four-hit shutout in Game 1 (4-0), but Brewers come back to win Game 2 (5-1)

TROY, N.Y. - Senior captain Stephen Schiavone threw a complete-game shutout to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to a 4-0 victory over Vassar College in Game 1 of a Liberty League doubleheader on Saturday at Robison Field. The Engineers, who dropped Game 2, 5-1, move to 11-22 overall (10-8 Liberty League), while the Brewers are now 17-16 (11-7 Liberty League).

Schiavone (4-3) allowed just four hits - all singles - over 7.0 innings, picking up eight strikeouts and just two walks in 7.0 innings. Vassar starter Jonathan Hong (3-4), surrendered four runs (1 earned) on five hits in 6.0 innings. He struck out three and walked one in a complete game effort.

The Engineers got the only runs they needed in the bottom of the first, when sophomore Ethann Meister tripled home junior Sam Lawrence and came around to score on an errant throw.

Sophomore J.T. Sawyer added a third run in the fifth, singling to center to score junior Yahriel Jimenez.

RPI capped the scoring in the sixth, when junior Thomas Desmond laced his team-leading fourth home run of the year over the fence in right.

Game 2 saw the Engineers score first, picking up a single run in the bottom of the second. Sophomore Christian Spagnuola ripped a single down the left field line, which plated Matt Lawrence.

Vassar came back with two in the top of the third, thanks to an RPI error and an RBI-groundout off the bat of Brooks English.

After four scoreless innings, the Brewers tacked on two in the top of the eighth. Cory Wuenschell delivered the big blow in the frame, driving a double high off the right field wall, to score one.

A Denis Shanagher RBI-single in the ninth made it a 5-1 game.

The Engineers put runners on in every innings, but the seventh, leaving a total of 14 on as a club.

Senior lefty Greg Echeverria (2-6) allowed five runs (3 earned) on 10 hits in 9.0 innings. He struck out five and walked one. Joe Conti (2-1) surrendered one run on nine hits in 6.0 innings for the win. Robert Winkelmann earned his second save of the year, throwing the final 3.0 innings and giving up a hit and two walks with two strikeouts.

Both teams are back in action on Sunday for a doubleheader in Poughkeepsie (12pm).
