RIT Upends Women's Lacrosse to Conclude Season

Sophie Hager notches six points, but Engineers fall in finale

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (8-8, 5-4 Liberty League) women's lacrosse team finished the 2016 season by defeating Rensselaer (7-9, 4-5 Liberty League), 19-8, on Senior Day at Tiger Stadium Saturday afternoon.

RIT scored the final six goals of the first half to pull away for a 10-4 halftime lead.

Sage Sarkis led RIT with five goals. Nicole Bingo, Mariah Hettel, Corrina Mandell, Maegen Schmauder and Holly Leone each scored a pair of goals, while Emily Livecchi tallied three goals and added an assist.

Sophia Wojnovich picked up her fourth win of the season in net, making three saves. Ward led RIT with three caused turnovers and had five ground balls. Mandell grabbed four draw controls giving her 183 for her career.

Shots were 36-13 in favor of RIT. The Tigers held a slight 18-16 ground ball advantage, and won 17-of-27 draw controls. RIT went 14-of-15 on clearing attempts, caused 10 turnovers and went 9-of-15 on free position attempts.

Sophie Hager led Rensselaer with six points on three goals and three assists. Erin DeLucca and Allie Claroni each scored two goals. Rebecca Willen took the loss in net for RPI.

Hettel opened the scoring for RIT, tallying an unassisted goal 18 seconds into the game. DeLucca tied the game on her goal off an assist from Hager. Hager tied the game at 2-2 on her second goal of the half.

Leone and Schmauder tallied consecutive goals for RIT, extending the RIT lead to 4-2 on Schmauder's goal off an assist from Livecchi with 25:56 to play in the half.

DeLucca and Claroni answered back with consecutive goals for the Engineers, tying the game at 4-4.

The Tigers went on a run over the final 24 minutes of the first half, out-scoring the Engineers 6-0. Sarkis and Livecchi each scored two of RIT's final six goals, while Ward and Mandell each scored to give the Tigers a 10-4 halftime lead.

RIT took the momentum into the second half, tallying the first three goals of the half. Sarkis made it 11-4 Tigers on her goal to open the second half scoring. Hettel converted a free position attempt to make it 12-4, and Schmauder made it 12-4 on her free position goal with 22:46 to play.

A Mackenzie O'Neil goal cut the RIT lead to 14-6, but the Tigers kept the pressure on, rattling off five straight goals. Sarkis scored two straight to make the score 16-6, and Bingo sandwiched a pair of goals in between a Leone goal to increase the RIT lead to 19-6.
