PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Trailing by two in the seventh inning, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team scored four runs to beat Plattsburgh State, 6-5, in Game 2 of a non-league doubleheader on Wednesday. The Engineers, who won Game 1 by a score of 2-1, improve to 14-4 overall, while the Cardinals drop to 8-8.
RPI scored four runs on two hits and an error in the seventh innings to take a 6-4 lead. Plattsburgh scored one in the bottom half of the inning, before freshman
Stephanie Deeb was able to induce a pair of groundouts to get the win in the circle. Deeb (2-2) worked the final 2.0 innings, allowing a run on two hits with a strikeout.
The hosts opened the scoring with a single run in the bottom of the first on an RBI-single off the bat of Dominque Zummo. RPI junior
Morgan Kollmeier answered with a run-scoring single in the third. Classmate
Stephanie Caudle followed with an RBI-double to give the Engineers a 2-1 lead.
Zummo quickly tied the game (2-2) in the bottom half of the frame, doubling to left to bring home Amanda Tantillo.
A two-run bottom of the fifth gave Plattsburgh a 4-2 advantage. Zummo was once again involved, reaching on an infield single to score the Cardinals' fourth run.
Caudle went 4 for 4 in the game, with two doubles and two runs batted in. Kollmeier was 2 for 3 with a double, two runs and an RBI.
In Game 1, the Cardinals scored a single run in the bottom of the second on a single by Kelsey Gage.
RPI got the run back in the third, thanks to a double down the left field line off the bat of sophomore
Devan Puhl.
After three scoreless innings, it was Puhl who then doubled to put the Engineers up 2-1, scoring Kollmeier.
Caudle (6-2) went the distance for RPI, surrendering a run on four hits in 7.0 innings. She struck out 13 and walked three. Plattsburgh starter Morgan Anderson also went 7.0, allowing two runs on eight hits. She had five strikeouts and one walk.
The Engineers are back in action on Saturday, when they host RIT in their Liberty League opener at Doris Robison Field. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1pm. Plattsburgh hosts New Paltz on Friday (3pm).
