Baseball Stays Alive with 6-3 Win

Meister homers twice as Engineers down Rochester

AMSTERDAM, N.Y. — Two home runs from sophomore Ethann Meister and five innings of shutout relief by Stephen Schiavone lifted the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to a 6-3 win against Rochester in a Liberty League Championship Tournament Elimination Friday at Shuttleworth Park.

RPI (15-26) will face the loser of tomorrow's contest between tournament host Union College and Clarkson University in another elimination game at 2pm. The Yellowjackets finish the season at 22-19.

Meister finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the Engineers (15-26). Schiavone allowed four hits while striking out two and walking one for his fifth win of the season.

Evan Janifer took the loss on the mound, surrendering five runs (two earned) on six hits with four strikeouts and no walks over four innings. Jake Meyerson went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs for the Yellowjackets, who left 12 runners on base.

RPI took advantage of three Rochester errors in the top of the first, scoring three unearned runs.  Sam Lawrence plated Matt Lawrence with an infield single to second and Jason Ramos RBI single along with an error in left field allowed two more runs to score.

Meister extended the Engineers advantage in the third with his first collegiate home run, belting a two-run shot to left, but the Yellowjackets responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

After Nolan Schultz drew a walk to load the bases, Matt Todd scored on a wild pitch to get Rochester on the board. Jake Meyerson cut the deficit to two, driving in two runs with a single up the middle.

Following an eight-hour rain delay, Meister generated the game's final run with a solo home run to left center.

The Yellowjackets put two runners on with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Schiavone got Jake Meyerson to strike out swinging to end the game.
