ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Junior
Courtney McArthur hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team to a 3-2 win over Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), on Friday afternoon in a Liberty League Tournament elimination game. With the win, the Engineers improve to 28-10 overall and advance to face the University of Rochester at 3pm. The Tigers conclude their season at 17-23.
McArthur (Coventry, RI/St. Mary Academy) hit a 1-0 pitch to the gap in left center, scoring sophomore
Devan Puhl (Frederick, MD/Linganore) from second for the game-winning RBI. Puhl, who led off the seventh with a walk, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by
Taylor Ten Eyck (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland). An intentional walk to junior
Stephanie Caudle (Gainesville, FL/Gainesville) followed, setting up McArthur's walk-off hit.
RIT scored first, when senior MacKenzie Martin (Deposite, NY/Deposite) singled home a run in the top of the third.Â
The Engineers rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth, which begin with Ten Eyck drawing a walk. A hit-by-pitch followed putting two on with no outs. McArthur dropped down a sac bunt to move both runners up and senior
Morgan Ten Eyck (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) delivered a two-run single to center, scoring pinch runners
Stephanie Deeb (Madison, NJ/Madison) and
Victoria Greco (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) for a 2-1 advantage.
The lead did not last long, as the Tigers tied the game at 2-2 in top of the seventh. RIT picked up the run with the benefit of just a single hit and a Rensselaer error, setting the stage for McArthur in the bottom half of the frame.
Five players recorded hits for the Engineers, including
Morgan Ten Eyck, who was 1 for 3 with two RBI. Caudle was 0 for 1 with two walks and went the distance in the circle, allowing two runs (1 earned) on seven hits in 7.0 innings. She struck out four and walked one.Â
RIT starter Sierra Valentine (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) gave up three runs on four hits in 6.0 innings, with four strikeouts and four walks.
