PURCHASE, N.Y. – Four different players found the scoresheet as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team defeated Manhattanville College, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field. With the win, the Engineers improve to 6-1, while the Valiants drop to 2-5-1.
Senior Alex Carlbom (Gothenburg, Sweden/Kents Hill School)netted her third goal of the season for Manhattanville to give the Valiants an early lead. Senior
Cori Winslow led the Engineers scorer with a goal and two assists.
After an uneventful opening six minutes, RPI got its first chance of the game in the sixth minute but junior Mackenzie Trainor cleared an
Ali Zumpetta shot off the line to keep the match scoreless. Less than six minutes later, Carlbom stole a pass intended for keeper
Joey Lyons and one-touched past the goalie to score into an open net. The goal was only the second given up all year by the Engineers, with the other coming in a 1-0 loss at No. 1 Williams College.
The lead did not last long, however, as freshman
Emily Kaplan knotted the score 72 seconds later when she put home the rebound of a Winslow shot that caromed off the post. RPI took the lead in the 29th minute on an
Alexis Castrellon score from the penalty spot, giving the visitors a 2-1 lead at the half.
Rensselaer increased its attack in the second half, outshooting Manhattanville by a 14-1 margin over the final 45 minutes. Senior Dolores Diemicke made several beautiful diving stops to limit RPI to just two goals the rest of the way, and the senior keeper finished the match with 11 saves in the full 90 minutes.
Manhattanville will have its last tune-up before MAC Freedom play starts on Wednesday, when the Valiants head into the city to take on Lehman College (5pm). The Engineers host Plattsburgh State on Monday (7pm).
