Women's Soccer Victorious in Liberty League Opener

Engineers get 14th minute goal from Emily Kaplan in 1-0 win

TROY, N.Y. – Freshman Emily Kaplan extended her scoring streak to three games as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team defeated Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), 1-0, on Friday afternoon at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 8-1 overall and 1-0 in the Liberty League. The Tigers drop to 5-3-1 and 1-1 in conference play.

Kaplan (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) netted the game's only goal in the 14th minute, converting on a break up the right wing. Collecting a long ball from senior Ali Zumpetta (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape), Kaplan ripped a right-footed shot past RIT senior goalkeeper Sienna Fisher (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg) for her team-leading fifth of the season and third in as many games.

The Tigers nearly equalized in the 24th minute, when senior Anka Parzych (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) delivered a cross from the right flank that found freshman Abbey Saia (Monroe, CT/Masuk) in stride, but her one-timed volley flew over the bar.

Rensselaer looked dangerous on each of its five first-half corners, save the final one, which sophomore Maddie Steinmetz (Malvern, PA/West Chester East) curled just over the top of the net and out of play.

Zumpetta had a chance to double the RPI advantage on the team's only corner of the second half, but her 50th minute header was kept out by Fisher.

After some loose defending in the opening 45 minutes, the Engineers were much more solid in the second half, not allowing a shot on target. Of RIT's five attempts in the final stanza, two were blocked and three were wide of the mark.

Kaplan and junior Dali Alarian (Folsom, CA/Vista del Lago) had opportunities in the final stages of the match, but Kaplan missed the frame and Alarian was denied by Fisher.

RPI freshman goalie Joey Lyons (Harwood, MD/Southern) collected her sixth shutout, while making three saves. Fisher had six stops at the other end of the field.

The Engineers are back in action on Saturday, when they host No. 1 William Smith at East Campus Stadium (2pm). RIT visits Skidmore tomorrow (2pm).
