FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Senior
Kensey Waterman finished a penalty kick in the 98th minute to lift the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Western Connecticut State, on Sunday at Rams Field. With the win, the Engineers improve to 2-0, while the Colonials drop to 1-2.
RPI, which improves to 2-0 for the first time since 2008, turned up the pressure in the extra frame, registering six of their 20 shots, including two on goal. Freshman
Clara Johnson put one over the top of the net and had another blocked in the 92nd minute, before junior
Stephanie May hit the crossbar.
After Johnson saw a third attempt stopped by Western Connecticut goalkeeper Jullian Fernandez, the Colonials luck ran out, as RPI senior winger
Cori Winslow broke behind he defense and was hauled down by Fernandez inside the penalty area.
Waterman stepped up and finished the penalty kick, just under the crossbar for her first tally as an Engineer.
Rensselaer out-shot Western Connecticut, 20-7, athought shots on goal were much closer (7-5). For the second straight game, the Engineers won the corner battle (7-2).

Joey Lyons made five saves to pick up her second straight shutout.
RPI is back on the field on Saturday, when it hosts Wilkes University at East Campus Stadium (4pm). The Colonials visit Vassar on Wednesday (4pm).
