TROY, N.Y. – Senior captain
Laura Horwood scored the eventual game-winning goal to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Union College on Saturday afternoon at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 9-15-2 (6-7-1 ECAC Hockey), while the Dutchwomen drop to 4-21-1 (1-12-1 ECAC Hockey).
Like the previous evening's contest, neither team was able to crack the scoresheet in open two frames, with RPI taking an 18-16 edge in shots into the third period.
Engineers' sophomore
Makenna Thomas (Hartland, WI/Chicago Young Americans) ended the drought at 2:40 of the third claiming a loose puck in the slot and rifling it into the top left corner for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Horwood (Belleville, ON/Durham West Lightning) then made it 2-0 with a highlight reel goal at 13:58. Tripped on her way into the left circle, she stayed on the puck before lifting a shot over the right shoulder of Union freshman goaltender Kate Spooner (Grand Pre, NS) for her fifth goal of the year. Assists went to freshmen
Blake Orosz (Chase Mills, NY/Nepean Wildcats) and
Kendra Farole (Irvine, CA/Anaheim Lady Ducks), who earned he first collegiate point.
Union appeared to have drawn within one with less than five minutes to play, when junior Katie Laughlin (Natick, MA) stuck home a rebound, but the play was reviewed and the Dutchmen were offside on the their entry into the zone and the goal was wiped away.
Freshman Haley Shugart (Toronto, ON) did get the visitors on the board with an extra attacker at 18:40 of the third, burying her sixth of the season from Laughlin. The Dutchwomen did not get any close, however, despite earning a power play in the final minute for a 6-on-4 advantage.
RPI sophomore
Lovisa Selander (Sollentuna, Sweden/SDE Riksserien) finished with 24 saves to improve to 9-13-2, while Spooner (4-12-1) had 26 stops at the other end of the ice.
The Engineers are back in action next weekend, when they host third-ranked Clarkson and fifth-ranked St. Lawrence on Friday (6pm) and Saturday (3pm), respectively, while Union hosts the two North Country foes in reverse order.
