CANTON, N.Y. - Despite putting three student-athletes in double figures in scoring, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team dropped a Liberty League contest at St. Lawrence University, 88-81.
Tom Horvat had 22 points to lead the Engineers, who also got 17 points from
Andreas Kontopidis and 16 from
Jonathan Luster.
The contest was a close rally between the two, as members of both teams made significant contributions.
Horvat added four rebounds, three assists and four steals, while Kontopidis, who came off the bench, chipped in with three rebounds and two assists in 26 minutes. Luster had five rebounds, three assists and two steals in 37 minutes for RPI, which shot better than 47 percent. The 81 points the Engineers scored were the most since registering 84 in the season opener, a win over SUNY Cobleskill (84-53).
The Saints were led by senior guard Kyle Edwards, who tallied 24 points, shooting 3-for-4 from the 3-point arc, and going 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Senior Kyle Kobis and junior Riley Naclerio both added 15 points. Naclerio also snagged nine rebounds. Sophomore Ben Crawford added 13 points and senior guard Willie Zachery added 10 points as all five starters reached double figures. The Saints shot 54 percent from the field, including 61 percent in the second half, and were 13-for-23 from behind the 3-point line.
The Saints held a slight 35-32 lead heading into the locker room after the first half. St. Lawrence was matched almost point for point throughout the second half as the back and forth action continued, but Crawford's dunk with less than a minute to play gave the Saints an 84-76 lead.
SLU improved to 15-3 overall and 8-1 in Liberty League play. RPI fell to 10-9, 4-6.
