GAMEDAY (Jan. 6, 2017): The Engineers (7-4; 1-1 Liberty League) open 2017 with a contest against Liberty League foe Clarkson (5-5; 0-1).

CLARKSON TIES: RPI third-year head coach Mark Gilbride joined Rensselaer in August 2014 from Clarkson, where he was the coach for the five years prior.

HALTED: RPI won four of its previous five games, including a 74-70 win over RIT in the conference opener on Friday, before losing to St. Lawrence on Saturday (76-63).

FRIDAY'S GAME: RPI jumped out to big leads to start both halves and the Engineers held off RIT, 74-70 ... RPI raced out to a 31-15 edge 11:55 into the contest ... RIT pulled to within three points, 39-36, at halftime ... The Engineers built a 13-point lead, 51-38, less than five minutes into the second half ... RIT got to within four points three times but the Engineers got to the rim and made free throws ... Sophomore Andreas Kontopidis had a team-high 18 points with a team-best eight rebounds, three assists and a block ... Tom Horvat scored 17 points with four rebounds, two assists and a steal.

SATURDAY'S GAME: St. Lawrence used a 16-1 run midway through the second half to turn a tie game into a 15-point lead and the Saints went on to defeat RPI, 76-63 ... Five student-athletes reached double digits in points for SLU ... Senior Jonathan Luster led Rensselaer in scoring with 13 points, along with three assists ... Tom Horvat scored 12 points with four rebounds and two assists and Marcus Giese had 10 points, five rebounds and a steal ... The Engineers shot 44.3% (27 of 61) from the field, including 16 of 31 (51.6%) in the second half.

MULTIPLE STARTING LINEUPS: Rensselaer has used nine different players to start games this year.

LEAGUE LEADERS: RPI leads the Liberty League in scoring defense (68.3 ppg allowed).

LAST SEASON VS. CLARKSON: The Engineers split their games with the Golden Knights, losing by six points in Troy (69-63) and winning by six in Potsdam (61-55).

LEADING CLARKSON: Perhaps no team relies on the consistency of two players more than Clarkson, as seniors Derek Hart and Drew Zlogar score 47.2% of the team's points ... Hart averages 20.4 points per game (2nd in Liberty League) and leads the league in field goal percentage (61.1%) ... Zlogar averages 17.2 points and 7.6 rebounds per game, which rank seventh and fourth in the league, respectively.
