TROY, N.Y. - Junior guards Devin Sorell and Madison Shea combined for 29 first half points and the Clarkson University women's basketball team outscored Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) by 15 points in the second quarter on its way to a 68-47 victory over the Engineers in a Liberty League contest at East Campus Arena. Sorell finished with 26 points, while Shea was two assists shy of a triple double in helping the Golden Knights improve to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in the conference. RPI falls to 5-7 and 0-3.

Sorell (Hannibal, NY / Hannibal) scored 18 points on 7 of 9 shooting, including 4 of 6 from three-point range, in 20 first half minutes. For the game, she made 8 of 16 shots from the field with five rebounds, an assist and steal. Shea (Clifton Park, NY / Shenendehowa) had 11 points, including 6 of 6 from the free throw line, along with four rebounds, six assists and three steals in 17 minutes of the first half. She filled the final box score with 15 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and six steals in 35 minutes.

Following a first quarter that saw the visitors holding a 20-16 advantage, Clarkson scored 24 points in the second quarter for a 44-25 halftime lead. The teams traded a pair of baskets to open the second frame and the Golden Knights led 22-20 with 8:20 remaining. They then scored seven straight points (29-21) and 12 of 13 for a 34-21 edge with 4:25 to play. Kathleen Coloney (Harrisville, NY / Harrisville) had four points and Shea added five in the spurt.

RPI's Sam Krumbhaar (Glen Burnie, MD / North County) scored on a jumper with just over four minutes to play, but Clarkson scored the next six points for a 40-23 lead with 2:32 left. The Golden Knights shot a combined 48.5% (16 of 33) from the field in the first half with 12 assists on 16 made baskets. RPI made 30.3% (10 of 33) of its first half shots. 

Rensselaer cut into the deficit by one point the third quarter as it outscored Clarkson 16-15, but the Golden Knights held the Engineers to just six fourth quarter points for the victory.

In addition to Sorell and Shea, senior Stephanie Grobe (White River Junction, VT / Hartford) reached double digits in points with 10, along with six rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocked shots. 

Krumbhaar and fellow sophomore LaKissa Martin (Las Vegas, NV / Rancho) both had 13 points for RPI, which held a 50-41 rebounding edge. Junior Shaina Iton (Peekskill, NY / Peekskill) had a game-high 15 rebounds with nine points, three assists and four blocked shots. Sam O'Keefe (Allentown, PA / Parkland) added eight rebounds.

Rensselaer travels to Skidmore College for a league game on Saturday, while Clarkson visits Union College in a conference matchup. Both games begin at 2pm.
