ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT (8-3-1, 2-2-1) women's soccer team tallied a second-half goal to beat Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (6-4-2, 3-1-1) 1-0 in a Liberty League contest at Tiger Stadium Friday afternoon. Tigers sophomore Sami Alur (Fremont, CA/Irvington) tallied the RIT goal.
Shots were 11-5 in favor of RIT, while corner kicks were even at 2-2. Kelly Rogers got the win in net for the Tigers, while
Joey Lyons took the loss for the Engineers, making five saves.
RIT had chances in the first half, but failed to score. Marla Roberts had a shot saved by
Joey Lyons in the 15th minute off a service from Elena Wolfe. Wolfe and Monique Polanco had shots midway through the first half. Wolfe's shot was saved, while Polanco's effort sailed just wide.
Alexis Castrellon had a chance for RPI in the 37th minute on a shot from the top of the box that went wide of the target. Mia White had a chance for RIT just before halftime that Lyons was able to get a hand on and keep the game scoreless at halftime.
The Tigers had a flurry of action in front of the Rensselaer net early in the second half. Morgan Monteith and Emily Thiel each had chances inside the RPI penalty box, but neither could not get a shot away.
Polanco had a shot on net in the 75th minute saved by Lyons. Then, in the 77th minute Alur took control of the ball in the middle of the field. She cut back and fired a shot from 20-yards out that beat Lyons into the left side to give the Tigers the lead. It was Alur's second goal of the season.
RIT's defense, ranked second in the Liberty League, shut down the Engineers the rest of the way to preserve the shutout.
The Engineers travel to No. 6 William Smith tomorrow (2pm), while the Tigers welcome Skidmore to town (2pm).
