W. Soccer Upended in LL Tournament

Engineers fall at St. Lawrence, 6-0

CANTON, N.Y. – Sophomore Megan Gannon and freshman Julia Mulhern each netted a pair of goals off the bench to lead the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team to a 6-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), in the First Round of the 2017 Liberty League Tournament. With the win, the Saints improve to 11-6 and advance to the semifinals. The Engineers conclude the season at 8-8-2.

Senior Katie Stames (Morrisville, VT/Peoples Academy) netted the game's first goal in the 8th minute, cutting across the top of the penalty area from the right, before slotting home her fifth goal of the season.

Gannon (Williston, VT/Champlain Valley Union) made it a 2-0 game in the 32nd minute, finishing first time off a pass from the right wing by junior Nikkie Syrotiak (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield). Less than seven minutes later, freshman Katie Clemmer (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) got into the act, burying rebound after a corner kick was cleared to the top of the box.

The Saints made it 4-0 just before the half, when Gannon scored on a breakaway in the 45th minute. Mulhern (Beaconsfield, PQ/Hotchkiss) earned the assist.

Mulhern scored both of St. Lawrence's two tallies in the second half, including a shot that found the inside of the right post before rolling across the line in the 65th minute. She then capped the scoring in the 69th minute.

Rensselaer outshot the Saints 30-12 in the game, including 13-8 on goal. Eight players registered multiple shot attempts, including senior Dali Alarian (Folsom, CA/Vista del Lago), who had a game-high seven attempts, including three on target.

Sophomore Joey Lyons (Harwood, MD/Southern) had one save in the first half, before giving way to senior Tori Riopelle (Ashburn, VA/Briar Woods), who had one stop in the second 45 minutes.

St. Lawrence travels to fourth-ranked William Smith for the Liberty League Semifinals on Friday (4pm).
