Women's Hockey Draws UNH, 1-1

Makenna Thomas scores late in the third to salvage game one of series

TROY, N.Y. – Junior Makenna Thomas scored a late equalizing goal to help the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 1-1 tie with a the University of New Hampshire, on Saturday afternoon at the Houston Field House. With the draw, the Engineers move to 4-6-3, while the Wildcats are now 6-3-4.

Trailing by one late in the third period, Thomas (Hartland, WI/Chicago Young Americans) pulled the Engineers even with her fourth goal of the season. Taking a feed up the middle from sophomore Sabrina Repaci (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros), Thomas ripped a shot off the cross bar that fell straight down the ice, before deflecting in off Wildcats freshman netminder Ava Boutilier (Charlottetown, PEI/Charlottetown Abbies AAA).

RPI had the better of the opportunities down the stretch in regulation, before outshooting the Wildcats, 4-2, in the five-minute overtime. Boutilier stood tall in the extra session, preserving a share of the spoils.

New Hampshire opened the scoring at 6:56 of the first period, when sophomore Taylor Wenczkowski (Rochester, NH/Boston Shamrocks) buried a one-time from the middle of the left circle. Classmate Carlee Turne (Scottsdale, AZ/North American Hockey Academy) delivered the cross-ice feed for the tally, with junior Marie-Jo Pelletier (Dalhousie, NB/Riverhawks) earned the secondary assist.
Selander (4-6-3) had 32 saves, including all 13 shots she faced in the second period. Boutilier (6-3-4) had 37 stops, with 14 coming in the second. Both teams went 0 for 4 on the power play.
