TROY, N.Y. – Junior
Whitney Renn scored a pair of goals, including the eventual game-winner to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Harvard University, on Saturday afternoon at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 10-20-2 (7-12-1 ECAC Hockey), while the Crimson drop to 4-18-5 (4-12-4 ECAC Hockey).
The win gives RPI its first season series sweep of Harvard since the 2009-10 season. The Engineers are now three point ahead of the Crimson for the eighth and final league playoff spot, with two games to play.
Renn (Troy, MI/Little Caesars) opened the scoring at 13:54 of the first, when junior
Shayna Tomlinson (Gilford, NH/Assabet Valley) sent a pass from behind the net that Renn one-timed past Harvard freshman goaltender Beth Larcom (Middletown, RI/St. George's School) from the low slot.
Just 21 seconds later, Crimson freshman Val Turgeon (Denver, CO/Shattuck St. Mary's) equalized, drawing a penalty before slotting home her fourth goal of the season.
Rensselaer took the lead for good (2-1) at 5:03 of the second, when Renn snuck in a shot from the left circle. Larcom got most of the shot, but not enough, as it just made it across the goal line.
Tomlinson doubled the RPI lead to 3-1 at 7:58 of the second, burying a rebound at the net front. The power play tally was her fifth of the year, with assists to senior
Katie Rooney (Buffalo, MN/Buffalo High School) and junior
Amanda Kimmerle (Anoka, MN/Anoka High School).
Freshman
Sabrina Repaci (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros) capped the scoring at 14:51 of the period, picking up her own rebound at the left side of the cage for her eighth goal of the season.
RPI sophomore goaltender
Lovisa Selander (Sollentuna, Sweden/SDE Riksserien) finished with 29 saves, while Larcom had 21. The Engineers went 1 for 5 on the power play, while Harvard was 0 for 5.
Rensselaer returns to the ice next weekend, when it visits No. 9 Quinnipiac and No. 10 Princeton on Friday (6pm) and Saturday (3pm), respectively. The Crimson host Yale and Brown next weekend.
