TROY, N.Y. – Senior captain
Riley Bourbonnais scored two goals to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team to a 4-3 victory over Princeton University on Friday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 7-24-1 (5-14-0) ECAC Hockey), while the Tigers drop 11-12-3 (6-10-3 ECAC Hockey).
Bourbonnais (Rochester, NY/Lincoln Stars) opened the scoring at 8:33 of the first period, when buried a second RPI attempt at a rebound on the doorstep. Freshman
Will Reilly (Toronto, ON/Nanaimo Clippers) took a shot from the point that was stopped by Princeton senior goalie Colton Phinney (Chatham, NJ/Islanders). Junior
Viktor Liljegren (Stockholm, Sweden/Fairbanks Ice Dogs) followed up with a shot that deflected to Bourbonnais, who lifted the puck over a fallen Phinney for the goal.
Freshman
Jake Marrello (Slingerlands, NY/P.A.L. Jr. Islanders) doubled the RPI lead at 14:32 of the opening frame, when he redirected a shot by junior
Jared Wilson (Calgary, AB/Vernon Vipers) off the inside of the right post and in. Freshman
Max Reisinger (Walding, Austria/Minot Minotauros) earned the secondary assist on Marrello's first collegiate tally.
Princeton got on the board at 6:39 of the second, taking advantage of a giveaway at the blue line to draw within 2-1. Sophomore Ryan Kuffner (Ottawa, ON/Glouchester) snapped a shot by Rensselaer sophomore goaltender
Chase Perry (Andover, MN/Wenatchee Wild) for his team-leading 15th goal of the season.
The two teams then traded goals – just 19 seconds apart – eight minutes into the frame.
???????Bourbonnais gave the hosts a brief 3-1 lead, before Princeton senior defenseman Tommy Davis (Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ/Youngstown) answered with his first goal of the year.
Wilson snapped home the eventual game-winning goal at 18:52 of the second, picking out the top right corner from the top of the left circle. Seniors
Jimmy DeVito (Bloomingdale, IL/Lincoln Stars) and
Parker Reno (Edina, MN/Edina High School) picked up the assists on Wilson's 10th goal and team-best fourth game-winner.
The Tigers pulled one goal back, just 39 seconds in the third, but were not able to find the equalizing goal, despite pulling Phinney with a little over a minute left in regulation.
RPI finished 1 for 3 on the power play, while the Tigers snapped a streak of six straight games with a man-advantage tally, going 0 for 6. Perry's 40 saves were one shy of his career-high, while Phinney wound up with 23 stops at the other end of the ice.
Rensselaer returns to action tomorrow night, when it hosts Quinnipiac in the 40th Annual Big Red Freakout! Puck drop is scheduled for 7pm. Princeton visits No. 7 Union tomorrow night (7pm).
