Women's Hockey Makes ECAC Hockey Playoffs Despite Loss

Engineers fall at No. 9 Princeton, 4-2, but qualify as eighth seed

PRINCETON, N.J. – Sophomore goaltender Lovisa Selander made 49 saves, but the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team fell at No. 9 Princeton University, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon, in the regular season finale for both teams. With the win, the Tigers improve to 18-8-3 (14-6-2 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 10-22-2 (7-14-1 ECAC Hockey).

Despite the loss, RPI qualifies for the ECAC Hockey Playoffs, thanks to Harvard falling at home to Brown, 3-1, on Saturday. The Engineers will be the eighth seed and travel to top seed Clarkson next weekend, for a best-of-three series (TBD).

Kelsey Koelzer opened the scoring for the hosts at 16:30 of the first period, with her eighth goal of the season. The tally, which was unassisted, came shorthanded.

Rensselaer pulled even (1-1) at 3:01 of the second, thanks to a power play goal from junior Shayna Tomlinson. Seniors Laura Horwood and Katie Rooney picked up the assists on Tomlinson's sixth goal of the year.

The Engineers then took a 2-1 lead at 15:09 of the frame, as senior Hannah Behounek netted goal number six on the year. Sophomore Makenna Thomas and freshman Sabrina Repaci had the helpers.

Molly Strabley pulled Princeton even (2-2), 5:10 into the third period with the lone assist going to Fiona McKenna.

The Tigers then took the lead for good with a power play tally at 15:50. Carly Bullock potted her 19th of the season, from Molly Contini and Claire Thompson, before Cassidy Tucker added an empty-netter to cap the scoring.

Selander made 16 stops in the first, 15 in the second and 18 in the third, while Princeton's Steph Neatby had 27 saves in total on the day.

RPI went 1 for 4 on the power play, while the Tigers were 1 for 5.
