TROY, N.Y. - Senior
Brian Hatcher made a turnaround jump shot from just above the foul line with no time remaining and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team ended the regular season with a 59-57 victory over Bard College in a Liberty League game at East Campus Arena. The victory came on Senior Day in which Hatcher and three others were recognized prior to the contest.
With the game tied 57-57, the visiting Raptors had a chance to take the lead in the waning seconds but Emmanuel Oyakhilome's (Lindenhurst, NY / Lindenhurst) attempt around the rim with the shot clock winding down was no good and rebounded by RPI senior
Jonathan Luster (Essex, CT / Valley Regional). The Engineers called timeout with 1.2 seconds remaining and Bard did the same.
Nate Kane (Glenmont, NY / Bethlehem), Rensselaer's third senior student-athlete, in-bounded the ball from the defensive side of mid-court, throwing a pass to Hatcher, who ran from the baseline to the foul line. He caught the ball with his back to the basket, turned to his right and got off a contested jumper that fell through the hoop as time expired. It was the first basket of the game for the fifth-year forward, and Kane's lone assist of the game.
It looked like the Engineers were going to win by a wide margin as they led 40-26 five minutes into the second half. Bard battled back, however, using runs of 8-1 and 13-2 to eventually tie the game at 55-55 with 2:21 to play. RPI went ahead by two points on a reverse layup from
Tom Horvat (Cranston, RI / Marianapolis Prep.), but the Raptors knotted the score on a left-handed layup from Armando Dunn (Queens Village, NY / Cardozo) with a minute remaining. A long three-pointer by the Engineers was rebounded by Bard, but the visitors could not gain the lead as the clock wound down.
Rensselaer sophomore
Andreas Kontopidis (Sherborn, MA / Dover-Sherborn) led all scorers with 21 points, including 14 in the first half, along with 12 rebounds. Horvat finished with 14 points, three rebounds, two assist, a block and three steals in 21 minutes off the bench. Hatcher, who missed the 2015-16 season due to injury, scored six points with six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Luster had seven points and Kane chipped in six.
Dunn, a sophomore, had 16 points and six rebounds for Bard. Chris Lockwood (Los Angeles, CA / Saugus) and David Runcie (South Orange, NJ / Columbia) had 10 points apiece with Lockwood pulling down eight rebounds.
RPI concludes the regular season with a 14-11 record with an 8-8 Liberty League mark. The Raptors finish 4-21 and 2-14.
