TROY, N.Y. - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) outscored Bard College 29-6 in the second quarter and the Engineers never trailed in the second half on their way to a 66-39 victory over the Raptors in a Liberty League contest at East Campus Arena. The game was the season finale for both teams.
Trailing 11-5 after the first quarter, RPI scored 15 of the first 17 points in the second quarter for a 20-13 lead with just under four minutes to play. Bard made it a five point game (20-15), but a three-point basket by
Elizabeth Eckhardt (Albany, NY / Guilderland) opened it to eight points.
Sam Krumbhaar (Glen Burnie, MD / North County) followed with a three of her own for a 26-15 edge.
The Raptors saw Jade Waring (Phoenicia, NY / Onteora) sink two free throws, but the Engineers got eight consecutive points from sophomore
Kinsley Rowan (Portland, OR / Sunset), including a pair of three-point baskets, for a 34-17 lead at halftime.
RPI made 9 of 19 (47.4%) of its second quarter shots, including 6 of 9 (66.7%) from behind the arc, while holding Bard to just 18.2 percent (2 of 11).Â
The Engineers extended their lead by a point in the third quarter, 48-30, and then tallied 18 points in the fourth.Â
Eleven different student-athletes had at least one point for the home team, which won for the third straight time to finish with a 10-15 overall mark (5-11 Liberty League). Junior
Shaina Iton (Peekskill, NY / Peekskill) had 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Eckhardt and Rowan both scored 10 points. Senior
Lauren Young (Kirkwood, MO / St. Joseph Academy), playing her final game for RPI, had a game-high eight assists, along with four rebounds, three points and two steals. Rensselaer's other senior,
Jackie Sortor (Colchester, VT / Colchester) added two points, four rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot.
Bard (0-25; 0-16) was led by senior Annie Kissel (Springfield, MA / St. Andrew's School). She had a game-high 13 points with five rebounds and two blocks. Sophomore Sarah Morris (Newport, RI / Rogers) had 11 points with seven rebounds and four steals.
